I was really surprised when I saw the list of our top-performing content for this year.

Because each piece of content on the list… was actually good.

How ridiculous is that?

Not that the content was good. But that I was surprised how good it was. (Proof that B2B doesn’t have to be boring 🙃)

I was really surprised when I saw the list of our top-performing content for this year.

Because each piece of content on the list… was actually good.

How ridiculous is that?

Not that the content was good. But that I was surprised how good it was. (Proof that B2B doesn’t have to be boring 🙃)

So before I list out the top-performing articles, I want to share some of my takeaways from why these articles were top-performing.

What Makes Good Articles Good?

Here are the main trends I saw from the articles that performed well for us:

1. Have an opinion

If you say something everyone agrees with, why say it?

That’s probably why our #1 performing article last year was about a fiery topic in SaaS sales:

Why We Don’t Offer Discounts. Ever.

Also something fun: 23% of readers visited our pricing page after reading that article.

2. Talk to smart people

If I listed out all the things I didn’t know, I’d die before I got to the end of the list.

Instead of trying to be an expert in everything, we talked to actual experts. And included their insights in articles we wrote.

4 out of 10 of our top-performing posts included interviews with people (much) smarter than us:

3. Try new things (and then write about them)

At Chili Piper we’re pretty lucky. Because there are tons of smart people doing really interesting things.

This year, we went all in on a program we call “Chili Experiments”. A Chili Experiment is an article written by someone at Chili Piper, about a new thing they tried (and crazy results they saw).

Of the 10 top-performing posts, 6 were Chili Experiments.

For me, it was really fun working with people on other teams to bring their articles to life and learning about all the cool things they’re doing!

Here’s the list of all our Chili Experiments in the top 10:

4. How We Booked 100+ Meetings at 3 Events in 3 Weeks

Event follow-up is broken, for everyone involved. It’s broken for attendees, who are bombarded with generic marketing emails after each conference. It’s broken for ops teams, who often have to go through lists and manually assign qualified leads to reps. And it’s broken for reps, who are tasked with following up with a huge list.
